How to Get Rid of Maggots in Your Wheelie Bin — and Stop Them Coming Back

Nobody wants to open their wheelie bin and find it crawling with maggots. But if it's happened to you, you're not alone — it's one of the most common complaints we hear from Wirral residents, especially in the warmer months. The good news is there are simple steps to deal with them and stop them coming back.

Why Do Maggots Appear in Wheelie Bins?

Maggots are fly larvae. Flies are attracted to food waste — especially meat, fish and cooked scraps. If a fly gets into your bin and lays eggs on food residue, maggots can hatch within 24 hours in warm weather.

How to Get Rid of Maggots in Your Bin

1. Pour boiling water into the bin. This kills maggots on contact. You may need several kettlefuls. Do this on a warm day so the bin dries quickly.
2. Sprinkle salt or use a diluted bleach solution. Both kill any remaining maggots and larvae. Pour down the inside walls of the bin and leave for 20 minutes.
3. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse with cold water and allow to drain fully before standing upright.
4. Let the bin dry completely before putting any waste back in — a dry bin is far less attractive to flies.

How to Prevent Maggots Coming Back

• Always wrap food waste tightly before putting it in the bin
• Double-bag meat, fish and cooked food
• Keep the bin lid closed at all times — check it isn't damaged
• Avoid putting food waste in a hot bin — let it cool first
• Rinse the bin after collection with a hose before it dries out
• Get your bin professionally cleaned regularly — fortnightly in summer
